As the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) opens the doors for 2026 online admissions, parents and guardians are urged to ensure that their children are properly enrolled for Grade 1 and Grade 8 at Gauteng public schools.
The GDE admissions process for 2026 will be open from Thursday, 24th July 2025, to Friday, 29th August 2025.
To make the process as smooth as possible, we’ve compiled a comprehensive checklist of the key documents required for GDE Admissions. Pay special attention to the Proof of Home Address, as it plays a pivotal role in securing a place for your child.
Key Documents for GDE Admissions 2026
The proof of home address is the most crucial document required when applying for GDE Admissions for Grade 1 and Grade 8. Without submitting the correct and valid proof, your application could be delayed or even rejected.
Here is a detailed checklist to ensure your documents are in order:
1. Proof of Home Address
For all GDE Admissions applications, proof of home address is a mandatory requirement. It is essential that the address on your documents matches the address entered during your online application process. If your home address is different from the one you submitted, your application may be considered incomplete.
Depending on your living situation, the required documents vary:
For Homeowners:
A municipal account (not older than 3 months) in the name of the applicant parent, showing the full residential address.
For Tenants/Renters:
A municipal account in the name of the landlord (not older than 3 months), showing the full residential address.
A lease agreement signed by both the landlord and tenant, including the full residential address and tenant details.
A rental payment receipt showing the full residential address (not older than 3 months).
A statement of account for the applicant parent, matching the full residential address.
For Applicants Living with Family/Parents:
A municipal account in the name of the homeowner (not older than 3 months).
The ID copy of the applicant parent.
Statement of account in the name of the applicant parent, with the same address as the municipal account (not older than 3 months).
2. Additional Identification Documents
Parents/guardians must also upload certified copies of at least one of the following identification documents for the application to be processed:
South African Parent ID or Passport.
Child’s Birth Certificate or Passport.
Refugee or Asylum Seeker Permit (if applicable).
Permanent Residence Permit, Study Permit, or Parent Work Permit (if applicable).
3. Documents for Grade 1 and Grade 8 Applicants
For Grade 8 Applicants:
The latest Grade 7 school report (for Grade 8 applicants only).
For Grade 1 Applicants:
Clinic Card/Immunisation Report (for Grade 1 applicants only).
4. Proof of Work Address (If Applicable)
If the applicant’s parent is employed, a Proof of Work Address is required alongside the proof of home address. This ensures all necessary information for verification is provided and helps the GDE Admissions process to proceed smoothly.
