The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has released the official 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination timetable for Grade 12 learners. The final Matric exams will run from Monday, 20 October until Thursday, 27 November 2025, including practical assessments and rewrite sessions for specific subjects.

This timetable provides a clear roadmap for learners, parents, and teachers, helping them plan revision schedules, exam logistics, and final preparations for South Africa’s most important school-leaving qualification.

How the Matric Exams Are Structured

Every matriculant writes a total of seven subjects. These include:

  • Four compulsory subjects:

    • Two languages (at least one must be the learner’s Home Language).

    • Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy.

    • Life Orientation.

  • Three elective subjects, chosen according to the learner’s school curriculum.

Exams are written in both morning (09:00) and afternoon (14:00) sessions. Papers typically last between two and three hours, depending on the subject. The spread of subjects over several weeks allows learners to balance revision across different areas of study.

Pass Requirements Explained

To successfully complete matric and obtain the National Senior Certificate, learners must meet the following minimum standards:

  • Pass at least six subjects out of seven.

  • Obtain 40% or higher in Home Language.

  • Score 30% or higher in at least two additional subjects.

  • If one subject is failed (including Home Language), the learner may still pass, provided the remaining six subjects are above 30%.

  • Achieve an overall average of 33.3% across all subjects.

While these are the minimum requirements, aiming higher is essential for access to universities, TVET colleges, and bursary opportunities.
