The South African government has recently announced an increase in social grants that will come into effect on 1 April 2023 and 1 October 2023.
This announcement has been made during the Budget Speech 2023, which was delivered by the Minister of Finance to outline the government’s budget plan for the upcoming fiscal year.
Social grants are a crucial means of support for many vulnerable South African citizens. The grant system is designed to provide financial assistance to people who are unable to support themselves or their families due to various reasons, such as old age, disability, illness, or poverty.
The government’s announcement of increased social grants is, therefore, a significant step towards supporting these individuals and ensuring they receive adequate financial assistance.

The R700 SASSA Grant is FAKE!
SASSA warns people against the circulating social media post that claims the agency has made available the R700 social grant.
On their Twitter page, SASSA says the advert is fake and does not come from the organisation.
“Please note that the below advert is fake and does not come from Sassa. No additional grant type is offered apart from the ones announced by Sassa,” said the agency.
President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the 2023 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, the 9th of February 2023 at 7 pm.
In the address, he mentioned that there will be an increase to the existing social grants which include the SASSA child support grant, disability grant, and the elderly grant in an effort to mitigate the effects of rising inflation on the poor.
This pledge is set to be outlined in the upcoming budget speech by the Minister of Finance.
The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) acknowledges the challenges faced by social grants recipients in replacing their expired SASSA gold cards and has issued an apology for the inconvenience caused.
SASSA SRD R350 Payment for Asylum Seekers
SASSA has introduced a better and easy way for asylum seekers to access their R350 grant. They recently announced that Asylum seekers can now obtain a SASSA system-generated number from the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) website at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/.
The Civil Society organisation #PayTheGrant calls out the South African Social Security and the Department of Social Development for their continued failure to maintain consistency in paying up the R350 Social Relief of Distress to the beneficiaries in time.
We are in mid-August, and it is said that some beneficiaries haven’t received their grant payment for the month and worse some are waiting for their application status to be updated as it still reflects as “pending”.
The Payment Association of South Africa (PASA) has recently announced that the validity of expired SASSA/Postbank gold cards has been extended until 31 December 2023, according to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA).
This decision is expected to bring great relief to social grant recipients who were concerned about their card’s validity.
