The Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation Dr Blade Nzimande participated in the budget vote Debate on Thursday, the 12th of May 2022 wherein he tabled the Department of Higher Education and Training Budget Vote, which would impact the NSFAS 2022/23 Budget.

Budget vote debates offer an opportunity for Parliament to discuss and formally adopt the budgets of government departments and entities that are funded through a parliamentary vote.

The debate allows the Parliament and the general public to be more informed about what departments are doing, how they are performing, and how public money is being used in a forum larger than a committee meeting.

NSFAS 2022/23 Budget

Minister Blade Nzimande took to the stand to advise on the budget of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) for the financial year 2022/23. He stated that the budget is set at R49 billion of which the Department of Higher Education and Training is contributing R45.9 billion to it.

“This includes funding reprioritised from the Departmental budget, to ensure that the full shortfall for the NSFAS is addressed in 2022/23 to support students during the 2022 academic year”.

NSFAS has started rolling out payments for 2022 to approved students, it confirmed that it has received the first tranche of its budgetary allocation for the first quarter of the financial year. Rejected students are encouraged to submit an appeal. 

NSFAS beneficiaries are reminded to always protect themselves from fraud by keeping their personal details such as ID number and myNSFAS account logins safe by not sharing them with anyone.
