URGENT NOTICE: SASSA Gold Cards will stop working on March 20, 2025!

All social grant beneficiaries must complete the SASSA Gold Card Replacement process to continue receiving their grants without disruption.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) and Postbank held a media briefing to provide updates on the SASSA Gold Card Replacement process. Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe and SASSA Acting CEO Themba Matlou assured beneficiaries that social grant payments will not be interrupted, even for those who have not yet received their new Postbank Black Card.

1. SASSA Gold Card Replacement Deadline: March 20, 2025

SASSA Gold Cards will stop working on March 20, 2025.

  • After this date, beneficiaries will not be able to withdraw their grants or make transactions using the old SASSA Gold Card.
  • Any remaining funds in expired Gold Cards will be safely stored in beneficiaries’ accounts and can still be withdrawn through the Post Office.
  • Completing the SASSA Gold Card Replacement is necessary to continue receiving payments without any issues.

2. Where and How to Complete the SASSA Gold Card Replacement

Beneficiaries can replace their SASSA Gold Card at Postbank Card Replacement Sites located in:

  • Shoprite
  • Checkers
  • Usave
  • Pick n Pay
  • Boxer
  • Spar

Required Documents:

  • South African ID or Temporary ID
  • No Fees – The Card Swap is Free

Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe confirmed that Postbank will continue issuing the new Postbank Black Cards even after the March 20 deadline to ensure all beneficiaries are accommodated.

3. Home Visits for Beneficiaries Who Cannot Travel

Recognizing that some beneficiaries are unable to travel for their SASSA Gold Card Replacement, SASSA and Postbank have launched a home visit program.

Who Qualifies for a Home Visit?

  • Beneficiaries who are ill or incapacitated
  • People with severe disabilities

Required Documents for Home Visit Requests:

  • A medical note from a doctor, social worker, or clinic confirming the illness or disability.

“Home visits are available only for qualifying beneficiaries, and every request will be assessed on its merits applying strict criteria,” – SASSA.

4. Over 1 Million Beneficiaries Have Already Completed Their SASSA Gold Card Replacement

As of March 10, 2025, more than 1 million social grant beneficiaries have successfully replaced their SASSA Gold Cards with the new Postbank Black Cards.

“Postbank and SASSA wish to express great appreciation to all grant beneficiaries that came forward in numbers responding to the call to replace their cards,” – Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe.

Beneficiaries who have not yet swapped their cards are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to avoid any disruptions in accessing their social grants.

5. No Interruption to Social Grant Payments

SASSA and Postbank have assured beneficiaries that all social grant payments will continue, even if they have not yet received their new Black Card.

“Postbank and SASSA assure social grant beneficiaries and the public that payments of social grants will not be interrupted,” – Postbank CEO.

  • Visit the nearest Postbank Card Swap location.
  • Bring their South African ID or Temporary ID.
  • Get the new Postbank Black Card free of charge.

The deadline for SASSA Gold Card Replacement is March 20, 2025. Beneficiaries should not wait until the last minute to complete the process.
