President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the 2023 State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Thursday, the 9th of February 2023 at 7 pm.

In the address, he mentioned that there will be an increase to the existing social grants which include the SASSA child support grant, disability grant, and the elderly grant in an effort to mitigate the effects of rising inflation on the poor.

This pledge is set to be outlined in the upcoming budget speech by the Minister of Finance.

The Civil Society organisation #PayTheGrant calls out the South African Social Security and the Department of Social Development for their continued failure to maintain consistency in paying up the R350 Social Relief of Distress to the beneficiaries in time.

We are in mid-August, and it is said that some beneficiaries haven’t received their grant payment for the month and worse some are waiting for their application status to be updated as it still reflects as “pending”.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has been processing applications for the reconsideration of the Covid-19 Social Relief Distress Grant of R350.

They have been having a backlog that has affected the smooth running of the process and a delay in the issuing of payments.

The new grant increases are expected to help recipients cope with rising costs of living, including inflation and the increasing prices of basic goods and services.
