City Power Johannesburg has announced that it will be carrying out planned power interruptions in various parts of the city on two occasions in late March 2025. These interruptions are necessary for maintenance work to improve the city’s electricity network, ensuring that residents and businesses continue to receive a reliable power supply.

The power interruptions are expected to last for eight hours on both Saturday, 22 March 2025, and Tuesday, 25 March 2025, with work scheduled from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on both days.

The Reason for the Power Interruptions

City Power Johannesburg has stated that these power interruptions are crucial to carrying out necessary maintenance work on their electricity network. This work is aimed at improving the efficiency and reliability of the power supply, which will benefit residents and businesses in the affected areas.

While City Power apologizes for any inconvenience caused, the goal is to ensure better service provision for everyone in the future.

In addition to the planned outages, City Power has warned residents and businesses to treat their electricity supply points as live during the outage. This means that even if the power is temporarily off, the supply could be restored at any time. As such, it’s important to stay cautious and avoid touching or interacting with electrical appliances, outlets, or wiring during the outage.

Areas Affected by the Power Interruptions

The planned power interruptions will impact a total of 24 areas across Johannesburg. These outages will be divided between two separate dates – Saturday, 22 March 2025, and Tuesday, 25 March 2025.

What to Do During the Power Outage

City Power Johannesburg has provided some useful tips for residents and businesses to manage the planned power outages effectively:

  1. Unplug Appliances: During the outage, it’s important to unplug all electronic appliances and devices. This helps prevent inrush currents when the power supply is restored. Sudden surges in electricity can damage electrical appliances and cause unnecessary network disruptions.

  2. Treat Electricity Points as Live: Even if power is off, residents are reminded that supply could be restored at any time. It’s important to treat all electrical outlets, cables, and devices as live to prevent accidents.

  3. Use Alternative Power Sources: If you rely on electricity for essential tasks or business operations, consider using alternative power sources, such as generators or battery-powered devices, during the outage.

  4. Report Issues Promptly: In the event that power is not restored at the scheduled time, or if any faults occur, residents should report the issue to City Power Johannesburg immediately to ensure a swift resolution.

The Selby Substation and Ongoing Power Outage

In addition to the planned outages, there are currently ongoing power issues affecting several suburbs in the City of Johannesburg. Areas served by the Selby Substation are experiencing an active outage, following an incident on 18 March 2025. Smoke emerged from the tunnels in the substation, leading to a power disruption in the affected areas.

The areas impacted include:

  • City and Suburban
  • Jewel City
  • Marshalltown
  • Marshalltown Extension 1
  • Selby
  • Salisbury Claims
  • Wemmer

City Power is working with Emergency Management Services (EMS) to resolve the situation, and the EMS team is expected to hand over the site to City Power operators for further inspection and repairs.

Residents in these affected suburbs are advised to stay informed through City Power’s communication channels, as the situation is being actively monitored and addressed. Power restoration will take place once the necessary repairs are completed and safety checks are carried out.

City Power’s Commitment to Service Improvement

City Power Johannesburg has assured residents that these outages, while inconvenient, are part of an ongoing effort to improve the city’s electricity supply infrastructure. Maintenance is crucial for the long-term stability of the electrical grid, and these interruptions will contribute to reducing the frequency and severity of unexpected power outages in the future.
